Scleral contact lenses are yet another method of achieving corrected vision. Unlike traditional corneal contact lenses that only cover the cornea, scleral lenses extend over the cornea and reach to the sclera (the white part of the eye). With a larger diameter, the lenses do not put pressure on the cornea, which is one of the most sensitive parts of the eye, and instead comes into contact with the tissue on the sclera – the conjunctiva – which is less sensitive, making scleral lenses even more comfortable than CRT/Ortho-K. The gap between the back surface of the contact lens and the surface of the cornea serves to encase the fluid on the surface of the eye and preserve moisture. Using a high oxygen material, these lenses are breathable and perfect for patients suffering from severe dry eyes.
Who is a good candidate for scleral contact lenses? Patients who experience the following conditions or symptoms:
Post-surgical complications, with surgeries including:
Patients whose vision correction was unsuccessful with other types of contact lenses are also encouraged to try scleral contact lenses.
