Specialized Vision Care for Irregular Corneas

Keratoconus and other irregular corneal conditions can make clear, comfortable vision difficult to achieve with traditional glasses or contact lenses. At Silicon Valley Optometry, we offer specialty contact lens fittings tailored to each patient’s unique eyes and visual needs.

Keratoconus is a condition in which the cornea gradually becomes thinner and develops a more irregular shape. This can cause blurred or distorted vision, light sensitivity, glare, and other visual difficulties. Because the corneal surface is irregular, traditional glasses or standard soft contact lenses may not always provide clear enough vision, particularly as the condition progresses.

Understanding Keratoconus

When the shape of the cornea changes, vision can change too.

How Scleral Lenses Can Help

When the shape of the cornea changes, vision can change too.

Scleral lenses are larger-diameter gas permeable contact lenses designed to vault over the cornea and rest on the white part of the eye, called the sclera. The space between the lens and the cornea is filled with preservative-free saline, creating a smooth optical surface that can provide clearer, more stable vision. For appropriate patients with keratoconus or other corneal irregularities, scleral lenses may offer improved vision and comfort when conventional glasses or contact lenses are not enough.

Specialty Lens Fitting at SVO

Personalized fitting for complex visual needs.

At Silicon Valley Optometry, Dr. Lucy Wun has experience fitting specialty gas permeable and scleral contact lenses for patients with keratoconus, including moderate to advanced cases. Specialty contact lenses require careful evaluation and precise fitting. Dr. Wun evaluates each patient's corneal shape, eye health, prescription, and individual visual needs to determine an appropriate lens design and fitting approach.
